Update Apple Watch

Before you start installing a watchOS update, you need the following things:

  • Apple Watch and linked iPhone within range.
  • The most recent version of iOS on the linked iPhone. Update your iPhone first before you get started with your Apple Watch.
  • A Wi-Fi connection to download watchOS.
  • The Apple Watch charger. To install a new version of watchOS on your Apple Watch, it must be at least 50% charged and connected to the charger.

Install watchOS update

You then install the update by downloading it first on the iPhone. Then the software update is sent to the Apple Watch and installed. This can take a few minutes. It goes like this:

  1. Take off your Apple Watch and place it on a connected charger.
  2. Unlock the iPhone and open the Apple Watch app.
  3. Go to the My Watch tab.
  4. Press General.
  5. Press Software update.
  6. Download the update. Enter the necessary access codes of the iPhone or Apple Watch.
  7. After downloading, wait patiently until the update is finished. The progress bar appears automatically on the Apple Watch. Keep the Apple Watch app on the iPhone open and keep it within reach of your Apple Watch. Do not remove the Apple Watch from the charger. An update can take up to an hour, so take your time.
  8. After the installation, the Apple Watch will automatically restart. As soon as the dial appears on the screen, it is ready to use again.

The download screen also shows how much space the watchOS update takes up. Is your iPhone too full? Then you have to free up space before you can download the update.

Problems with Apple Watch update

You may encounter problems when updating the Apple Watch. First check whether the charger is also connected to a power source. If this is the case, restart the Apple Watch. Hold down the side button and turn the Apple Watch off and then on again. If this does not help, do the same with the connected iPhone. Then restart the watchOS update.

A beta profile can also throw a spanner in the works, so it is not possible to update watchOS. In this case, remove the beta profile of the Apple Watch. You do this by going to General> Profiles> Delete profile in the Watch app on your iPhone. To remove the beta profile of iOS, go to General> Manage profiles and devices on your iPhone> Remove profile. You can then download the iOS beta profile again.

Install watchOS beta

Apple regularly releases a new watchOS beta for developers. These are test versions with new functions that still need to be tested. These betas are only available to registered developers, not to ordinary users. There is also no public beta version.

After you restart Apple Watch you can continue with the actual installation. The certificate has ensured that the watchOS beta update is ready for your Apple Watch. Once the Watch app has recognized this, installing is a piece of cake. It works in the usual way:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to the Apple Watch and starts the Watch app.
  2. Go to the My Watch tab.
  3. Go to General> Software update.
  4. If the update appears, press Install and follow the steps on the screen.

As with regular watchOS updates, your Apple Watch must be at least 50% charged and banned from the charger.

If the watchOS update fails during the verification step, you should try again. If it fails several times, it can help disconnect the Apple Watch from the iPhone and reconnect it. Then you try again.

Downgrade watchOS

It is not possible to downgrade your Apple Watch yourself to an older version of watchOS. Downgrading means replacing a newer version of the software (for example, a beta version) with an older version, for example the latest stable version. This is only possible if you return to the Apple Store.
