The Apple Watch regularly receives software updates. With this Apple solves security problems and sometimes there are also new functions. How do you install these updates and what do you all need to consider when updating your Apple Watch? In this tip you can read how to install new firmware on your Apple Watch.
Before you start installing a watchOS update, you need the following things:
You then install the update by downloading it first on the iPhone. Then the software update is sent to the Apple Watch and installed. This can take a few minutes. It goes like this:
The download screen also shows how much space the watchOS update takes up. Is your iPhone too full? Then you have to free up space before you can download the update.
You may encounter problems when updating the Apple Watch. First check whether the charger is also connected to a power source. If this is the case, restart the Apple Watch. Hold down the side button and turn the Apple Watch off and then on again. If this does not help, do the same with the connected iPhone. Then restart the watchOS update.
A beta profile can also throw a spanner in the works, so it is not possible to update watchOS. In this case, remove the beta profile of the Apple Watch. You do this by going to General> Profiles> Delete profile in the Watch app on your iPhone. To remove the beta profile of iOS, go to General> Manage profiles and devices on your iPhone> Remove profile. You can then download the iOS beta profile again.
Apple regularly releases a new watchOS beta for developers. These are test versions with new functions that still need to be tested. These betas are only available to registered developers, not to ordinary users. There is also no public beta version.
After you restart Apple Watch you can continue with the actual installation. The certificate has ensured that the watchOS beta update is ready for your Apple Watch. Once the Watch app has recognized this, installing is a piece of cake. It works in the usual way:
As with regular watchOS updates, your Apple Watch must be at least 50% charged and banned from the charger.
If the watchOS update fails during the verification step, you should try again. If it fails several times, it can help disconnect the Apple Watch from the iPhone and reconnect it. Then you try again.
It is not possible to downgrade your Apple Watch yourself to an older version of watchOS. Downgrading means replacing a newer version of the software (for example, a beta version) with an older version, for example the latest stable version. This is only possible if you return to the Apple Store.
